Waist-hip ratio or Waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) is the ratio of the circumference of the waist to that of the hips. It is calculated by measuring the smallest circumference of the natural waist, usually just above the belly button, and dividing by the hip circumference at its widest part of the buttocks or hip. The ratio is applied both to women and men.
For example, a person with a 32″ waist and 37″ hips has a waist-hip ratio of about 0.86.

Its not only the amount of body fat you have, but also where in your body the fat is stored that impacts on your health. Adults who store most of their body fat around their waists have an increased risk of high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke compared with those who have the same amount of body fat stored around their hips and thighs.

Measuring your waist-to-hip ratio is an easy way to see how much weight you are carrying around your abdomen as opposed to around your hips.
Measurement:
- Waist measurement with stomach relaxed, measure waist at its narrowest point which normally at your navel or belly-button.
- Hip measurement during standing, measure hips at widest point or around the bony prominence.

WHR for Male
0.90 or lower - normal weight
0.90 to 0.99 - over-weight
1.0 or higher - obese

WHR for Female
0.80 or lower - normal weight
0.81 to 0.84 - over-weight
0.85 or higher - obese

The WHR has been used as an indicator or measure of health, and as a risk factor for developing serious health conditions.

WHR is used as a measurement of obesity, which in turn is a possible indicator of other more serious health conditions. The WHO states that abdominal obesity is defined as a waist–hip ratio above 0.90 for males and above 0.85 for females, or a body mass index (BMI) above 30.0. The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) states that "total cholesterol levels are usually higher in persons with predominant abdominal obesity, defined as a waist-to-hip circumference ratio of ≥ 0.8 for women and ≥ 1.0 for men.
